PILLORIVM (Inno alla Gogna)



HAIL! Hi`roglypbick State Machin,
Contriv`d to Punish Fancy in;
Men that are men, in thee can feel no Pain,
And all thy Insignificants Disdain.
Contempt, that false New Word for shame,
Is without Crime, an empty Name.
A Shadow to Amuse Mankind,
But never frights the wise or Well-fix`d Mind:
Virtue despise Humane Scorn,
And Scandals Innocence adorn.


Salve! Geroglifica macchina di stato
a punir fantasia qualcuno ti ha inventato:
uomini che sono uomini non hanno in te dolore
e delle tue inanità non danno alcun valore.
Oltraggio, che falsamente vuole onta indicare
se non c'è alcuna colpa, un vuoto nome appare.
ombra che può soltanto gli uomini divertire, 
ma menti ferme e sagge mai certo intimorire;
Virtù l'umana derisione sprezza, 
e d'innocenza scandalo accresce la bellezza.
